Mission and goals
The Young Carers Program is an inter-agency strategy developed to meet needs of Young Carers and their families by facilitating supportive programs throughout Toronto. Programs focus on recreational, social, educational, and skill development activities.
We strive to foster resilience in Young Carers by creating opportunities for mutual support, fun, and optimal development, which aim to strengthen the resources within the youth as well as their families.

history
Hospice Toronto is a non-profit organization whose primary service is a volunteer-based in-home hospice and palliative care program. Hospice Toronto has provided support for children living with family members with life limiting illnesses since 1998. Increasingly observed was the active care children took on in homes to assist a loved one.
The origins of Hospice Toronto’s Young Carers Program (YCP) came from attending the 2007 LHIN Innovation presentations. At this event, Hospice Toronto's executive director Dena Maule connected with Sylvia Baago from the Powerhouse Project and learned about the Young Carers Initiative (YCI) and the work of Marge Dempsey (the creative energy behind the YCI), and who spearheaded the project under the auspices of the Alzheimer Society of the Niagara Region. Hospice Toronto began a working relationship to develop a framework for an urban model, following the highly successful model of the UK program; now operating for over 20 years and with 350+ chapters nationally.
Funding was received from the federal government's Social Development Partnerships Program in 2009 to set up an urban demonstration project to contrast the rural Niagara model, and impact diverse urban communities with a focus on developing a tool kit for replication across the country.
We've now been successfully running programs throughout Toronto for over 10 years and supporting Young Carers all across the GTA.
